Sports Coaching South Africa, the volunteer programme from work abroad expert, BUNAC, gives students, school leavers, gap year travellers and career breakers aged 18 and over the opportunity to work with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and to make a difference to their lives.

Self-motivated, adventurous volunteers who enjoy playing or coaching sports have the chance with this BUNAC programme to work in a fun, yet challenging, environment in the South African township of Port Elizabeth.

Participants spend time helping children living in hardship to play and develop through sports that they are passionate about, and in doing so the volunteers also receive an unforgettable, life-enriching experience by living and working abroad.

The volunteer abroad programme is designed to use sport to develop responsible youth, keep children off the streets in a light-hearted, consistent way, as well as to bridge social divides and raise awareness and knowledge about a wide range of key health and social issues.

Your responsibilities

  • Use the power of sport to raise awareness of health and social issues among underprivileged children
  • Teaching your chosen sports in Port Elizabeth to children from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Instilling  life skills and raise awareness of health and social issues
  • Live with other volunteers, working alongside local staff

Volunteers who are able to lead coaching sessions in football, cricket, rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, basketball and swimming are particularly in demand.  With the exception of swimming, no formal coaching qualifications are necessary.

Recruitment is on a first-come-first-served basis, following an orientation interview, police check and health screening, and successful applicants are required to be flexible, have good communication skills, plus the right attitude and determination to live in a developing country with the mental and physical challenges that entails.
