Visit Rhineland-Palatinate

Visit Rhineland-Palatinate for a romantic German gap year!

Touring in Rhineland-Palatinate, the most westerly German federal state neighbouring Belgium, Luxembourg and France, is always a pleasure! The diversity of the landscape and culture of the ten Rhineland-Palatinate regions, the Rhine and the Moselle being two of them, invites you to visit, to see, to taste and to discover.

You can simply relax, let go and enjoy yourself in the countryside of rolling hills, vineyards as far as the eye can see, romantic rivers, castles and ruins shrouded in legend, historical towns with timber framework buildings where you can end your tour with a glass of Riesling in the evening!

Hiking and biking: breathing the spectacular nature

The natural beauty of Rhineland-Palatinate provides the perfect natural playground for a number of outdoor activities like hiking and biking. Each hiking trail has its own special features: The paths lead through uplands, past ravines and lakes, across meadows and through woods, with breath-taking views of picturesque river and vineyard landscapes. The jewels in the crown of hiking trails are undoubtedly the “Steige“ – the long-distance hiking trails of Rhineland-Palatinate! For those who enjoy the feeling of a fresh breeze blowing in their face have a variety of choices amongst 7,000 kilometres of quality-tested cycling routes meander through the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate. Uniform signs along the cycle routes make it easier for you to move along while enjoying the diversity of the passing countryside with no worries at all. Tours can be selected according to their gradient or according to landscapes or cultural interests. It’s all up to you!

Wine tasting: paradise for wine lovers

Where can good wines be enjoyed more than where the vines grow? Viticulture was brought to Rhineland-Palatinate by the Romans over 2,000 years ago and has been thriving here ever since. The region produces around 70 percent of all German wine and is a real paradise for wine lovers. Wineries are the best places to enjoy the light, fruity and delicate wines grown in the excellent Rhineland-Palatinate soil.

Culture and events: historical and modern at the same time!

Rhineland-Palatinate is home to 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites: Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the city of Trier on the Moselle, Speyer Cathedral and the Limes (former Roman border line). More than 500 castles, castle ruins, palaces and fortresses can be found here. Besides, Rhineland-Palatinate is never boring with more than 1,000 cultural, wine, beer, local and public festivals. An example is the “Rhine in Flames” event, which sees the Rhine Valley lit up in the fascinating fireworks!
