Want a life-changing gap year experience which transforms your CV but doesn’t need cash, skills or qualifications? Want to explore a different culture by living with a local family and volunteering overseas alongside local young people? Then apply today for International Citizen Service (ICS), and you could be on a plane to Africa, South America or the Middle East in January.
ICS offers a government-funded, 12-week overseas placement to any 18-25 year-olds from the UK.*
On an ICS placement with International Service, you’ll live within your local community, volunteering overseas on a real development project alongside young people from the UK and the project’s host country.
This isn’t voluntourism. We are an international development charity with over 60 years’ experience supporting the world’s most marginalised people to take control of their own lives. We only work with projects that have specifically asked for our help – and where our volunteers can use their energy and skills to make a direct impact on reducing poverty.
So you could be doing anything from helping skilled female artisans to get a better deal for their labour to running inclusive sports sessions to give children with disabilities the chance to learn and play.
And with 98% of ICS volunteers recommending the programme as a way to develop skills for employment, you’re getting a head start in your career as well as the overseas experience of a lifetime.
Fraser Brien, aged 24, said:
” I wanted to do ICS as it was tangible than other volunteer opportunities – you can do things that really make a difference. It’s not a holiday and it’s not trafficking in young people to make money. ICS gets most involved in the community and makes the biggest impact long term.
“I’ve got more confidence because of ICS – the whole team has grown in confidence. I’ve learnt a lot about patience and how to adapt to a new culture.”
Who is ICS for?
ICS placements are for all 18-25 year-olds in the UK.
Our volunteers come from all corners of the UK and all different backgrounds and employment experience, from school leavers to supermarket employees and everything in between.
Do I need qualifications or experience?
No. There is no minimum experience or qualification requirement. You just need a positive attitude and the ability to work well with other people. We’ll find out if ICS is right for you at a very friendly assessment day in a few weeks’ time.
*You must be a UK/EU citizen, or have indefinite leave to remain in the UK AND have lived in the UK for more than 12 months:
