Volunteering in Africa or Asia with Restless Development is really simple.
We don’t do gap year experiences. If you’re looking for Instagram photos and long, lazy days in the sun— then we’re not for you. If you want to make a real difference in the world, read on.
Restless Development is the youth-led international development agency that is proud to make a huge impact in the communities it works in.
On the International Citizen Service (ICS) programme, which we help deliver, you can challenge yourself to change the world by taking part in a fully-funded volunteer placement in Africa, Asia or Latin America.
You’ll spend up to 12 weeks working alongside local young volunteers on real, sustainable development projects. These range from sexual and reproductive health and rights workshops, to organising sports tournaments and talent shows focused around living positively with HIV, to Dragons Den-style challenges to improve young people’s livelihood skills.
Over 10,000 young people have already taken part in the ICS programme. This is your opportunity to utilise your passions, skills and creativity to tackle some of the world’s biggest problems.
What is ICS?
ICS—the International Citizen Service—is a UK government-funded overseas volunteering programme for any UK or EEA citizens aged 18-25 on the day of travel.
It’s run by 11 different organisations who all bring something different to the programme. ICS is currently run in 27 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America and you’ll travel to the community where the need is greatest at the time you’re available.
You’ll receive training from development professionals before you leave, and upon your arrival abroad, in how to get the most out of your placement, as well as being given a full safety briefing. Your first few weeks will be spent with your fellow volunteers, living and training together before you head off to carry out some proper sustainable development work, embedded within a local community.
You’ll live with a host family and share in their day-to-day lives, their culture (and their food!), as you work closely with your local counterpart on development projects that address the needs of the local community at that time.
Upon your return to the UK, you’ll carry out your very own “Action At Home”, choosing how you want to put your new-found skills and passion to use in your community. This could be by volunteering with a local organisation, getting involved in a campaign, lobbying your MP, writing a blog, hosting a fundraising event…the list goes on!
